VVF Prevention & Treatment
Understanding Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF)
Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) is a serious medical condition that occurs when a hole develops between the bladder and the vagina, leading to continuous leakage of urine. This condition not only affects a woman’s physical health but also causes deep emotional, social, and economic challenges. Most cases of VVF in Nigeria and other parts of Africa are caused by prolonged, obstructed labor without timely medical intervention.
At InterMediation Foundation Nigeria (IMN), we are dedicated to reducing the incidence of VVF and providing compassionate care for women living with the condition.
Our Approach to VVF Prevention
Prevention remains the most effective strategy in addressing VVF. Our prevention programs focus on:
- Awareness & Education – Conducting community outreach programs to educate women, families, and communities on maternal health and safe childbirth practices.
- Advocacy for Skilled Birth Attendance – Encouraging deliveries in healthcare facilities with skilled professionals to minimize the risk of prolonged labor.
- Promotion of Girl Child Education – Educating young girls reduces early marriages and early childbirth, two major risk factors for VVF.
- Capacity Building for Healthcare Workers – Training midwives and community health workers to identify and manage high-risk pregnancies early.
Our VVF Treatment Services
For women already living with VVF, IMN provides holistic treatment and rehabilitation services to restore dignity and improve quality of life. These include:
- Surgical Repair – Working with skilled surgeons and partner hospitals to perform corrective surgeries that close the fistula and restore normal function.
- Post-Surgical Care – Offering comprehensive follow-up care to ensure proper healing and reduce the chances of recurrence.
- Psychosocial Support – Providing counseling and support groups to help women cope with emotional trauma and social stigma.
- Rehabilitation & Reintegration – Supporting women with vocational skills training, financial assistance, and empowerment programs to help them rebuild their lives.
Why Our Work Matters
Every year, thousands of women develop VVF due to preventable causes. At IMN, we believe no woman should suffer in silence. Through prevention, treatment, and empowerment, we are restoring hope and transforming lives—one woman at a time.
