Dr. Sa'ad Idris
Head Surgeon

Dr. Sa'ad Idris, originally from Zamfara State, Nigeria, is a dedicated surgeon specializing in fistula treatment. His involvement in fistula surgery began after a local women's group in Sokoto lobbied for doctors to be trained in fistula repair.

Following his training in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Dr. Sa'ad gained experience in various states in northern Nigeria before returning to Zamfara to lead the Faridat Yakubu General Hospital. Notably, both the former First Lady and the current Commissioner of Women’s Affairs in Zamfara State are staunch supporters of fistula advocacy.

Dr. Sa'ad has not only practiced as a fistula surgeon, but has also mentored other doctors interested in acquiring fistula repair skills. Dr. Sa'ad was sponsored by the Fistula Care Project to acquire advanced surgical experience while serving on the Africa Mercy hospital ship in Benin. This opportunity allowed Dr. Sa'ad to gain exposure to a different environment and improve his skills as an educator. A fellow surgeon remarked that Dr. Sa'ad's dedication to his patients, exceptional surgical abilities, and unwavering commitment to fistula care were truly commendable.

Dr. Sa'ad was promoted to the prestigious role of Commissioner of Health for the State of Zamfara. Although this position provided him with the chance to be a strong advocate for fistula-related issues in his state and beyond, it also restricted his availability as a fistula surgeon. Although, Dr. Sa'ad’s tenure as a commissioner has come to an end but his dedication to fistula repair remains strong, and he is actively involved in collaborative initiatives with various organizations to address the backlog of fistula cases in repair facilities nationwide.

Dr. Sa'ad holds fellowships from the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS.Ed), the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (FRCSI), and the International College of Surgeons (FICS). He is also a FIGO certified international Fistula trainer and has authored numerous publications. With a professional tenure of over 29 years, he has performed more than 25,000 fistula repairs, averaging around a thousand and two hundred repairs annually out of the twelve thousand repairs in Nigeria annually. His work spans across Nigeria, Mozambique, Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal, Ghana, the Mercy Ship in Benin Republic, New York, and Bangladesh.
